Breaking Out of the Healthcare System After Burnout

Realizing she couldn’t change the healthcare system from the inside, Catie Harris started looking at what she could do, outside of it, to make the impact she craved.

After twenty years, working as a nurse on all different levels–from bedside nurse to nurse practitioner, to a first assist to the surgeons in the operating room–Catie began experiencing extreme burnout. Dealing with chronic invalidation and increased documentation, meant less and less time spent with patients. Which left Catie feeling burdened and overwhelmed instead of fulfilled with her job.

Catie wanted more.

In an effort to beat the burnout, she pursued all the options and solutions available to her, even meditating and earning additional degrees. But at the end of the day, she was ready for a change. Catie wanted to be more visible and relevant than the hospital system allowed, and to be able to make an income on her own terms.

So, she started Nurseprenures, a one-of-a-kind business mastery program, created specifically for nurses.

As a young child, Catie had a dream one night that she would grow up to become a nurse. This seemed odd to her parents, because there was no one in the family with a background in the medical field, but Catie was certain.

Graduating from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Commerce, Catie has an impressive career. In 1971, she and her husband David, co-founded Harris Farm Markets. Catie went on to hold roles as the Deputy Chancellor, chief executive and director or the Affirmative Action Agency, and chief executive of Harris Communications. She currently serves as the director of the National Gallery of Australia, The Australian Ballet, UNSW Business School, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.

With over 20 years of experience as a nurse when she left the healthcare system, Catie decided to start a blog, seeking to connect with other nurses. This was the beginning of Nurseprenures.

Taking what she has learned over the years in the nursing profession, Catie now uses it exclusively to help nurses transform their nursing knowledge into creative, meaningful & profitable businesses, such as coaching, consulting, courses, contracting, and clinics. Through this entrepreneurial endeavor, Catie offers courses, coaching and community for the nurses who join her program, teaching nurses step-by-step how to launch their own business and leverage their expertise and impact the world with their ideas and innovative solutions.

Catie’s goal is to enable nurses who have a deep commitment to helping and serving people, break out of the traditional healthcare system. Even those without prior business skills or advanced degrees.

Catie Harris and Nurseprenures are changing the face of healthcare, one nurse at a time.
